The nest is placed directly on the ground, preferably in a tussock or among heather in open terrain. The female usually lays 4–8 eggs, but in good vole years the clutch can be considerably larger. Incubation lasts about 26–29 days and the female incubates alone while the male hunts for her. The young leave the nest and disperse into the vegetation before they can fly.
