Song Thrush: In winter
The Song Thrush is a short-distance migrant that leaves Sweden for the winter, unlike several other thrushes.
- Migration: it arrives in late March–April and overwinters in Western Europe and around the Mediterranean.
- Food: during the snow-free season it takes snails, earthworms and insects, supplemented with berries in autumn before departure.
- Snail-smasher: it is known for beating snails against a stone until the shell cracks, a technique that works even in late autumn.
Because the species migrates, it is seen in Sweden above all during the breeding season, not in winter.
