Tawny Owl: Nest boxes

The Tawny Owl readily takes a nest box if it is roomy enough — considerably larger than boxes for small birds.

  • Internal dimensions: a spacious box, on the order of 30×30 cm at the base and about 50 cm tall.
  • Entrance: an oval or rectangular opening of about 15×20 cm, or alternatively a completely open top — both are common designs for owl boxes.
  • Placement: mounted high, 4–6 metres up, in an older tree at a woodland edge or in parkland with a clear approach for the owl to fly straight in.
  • Orientation: preferably turn the opening away from the prevailing weather (rain and wind) to keep the nest dry.
