Tawny Owl: In winter
The Tawny Owl is a distinctly resident bird and stays in its territory throughout the winter.
- Territory: it is extremely faithful to its territory and rarely moves far from its breeding area, even in cold weather.
- Call: autumn and winter are its most vocal time — the famous "hu-hu-hu-huoo" sounds from November to early spring.
- Food: in winter it hunts voles, mice and small birds from a perch, well adapted to dark and cold nights.
That it survives the winter on site is bound up with its strong territorial behaviour and its ability to hunt even under harsh conditions.
