The Ural Owl breeds in stout tree holes, broken stumps and old raptor nests, and readily takes large owl nest boxes, which have been important for the species' spread. The female normally lays 2–4 eggs, and the clutch size is strongly governed by the availability of small rodents. In good vole years breeding success can be very high.
