The Velvet Scoter breeds beside fresh water in the mountains and on islands in the archipelago. The female places the nest well hidden on the ground, often in dense vegetation or under a bush, and normally lays 7–9 eggs. Breeding begins late in the season compared with many other ducks, and the female incubates alone. The young are led to the water shortly after hatching, and several females with broods may sometimes join together.
