Its calls are the commonest way of detecting the species. Most characteristic is a shrill, pig-like and rising squeal, often described as a squealing "krriii" or a series of squealing grunts. In addition, a rhythmic, tapping "kipp-kipp-kipp" can be heard, especially at night. The sounds are best heard at dusk, dawn and during the night.
