The Western Marsh Harrier hunts by gliding low and watchfully over the reeds and dropping onto its prey in a swift turn. Its diet is varied and includes coots and other reedbed birds, ducklings, small rodents, frogs, birds' eggs and occasionally fish remains and carrion.
