The Western Marsh Harrier is a migrant that leaves Sweden entirely during the winter.
Wintering: it migrates to the Mediterranean region and Africa south of the Sahara for the winter.
Arrival and departure: the species arrives in April and leaves the country in September, so in winter it is absent from the landscape.
Summer visitor: it is best seen from May to August at large bird lakes such as Hornborgasjön, Tåkern, Kvismaren and Oset, where it glides low over the reeds.
Since the species depends on open reed marshes, the southward winter migration is a necessity.
