The Whimbrel breeds on open bogs, heaths and sub-montane ground, where the female lays her eggs in a shallow scrape on a tussock or in low-growing vegetation. The clutch normally comprises 4 eggs, which are incubated by both parents. Both birds also take part in the vigorous defence of the nest and young against predators, corvids and raptors, often with loud alarm calls and aerial attacks.
