The Whooper Swan is largely a migratory bird, but more and more remain and overwinter in Sweden where there is open water and grazing land.
Departure: many birds migrate south in autumn, at the same time as northern and Icelandic Whooper Swans arrive to overwinter here.
Winter flocks: large flocks rest and overwinter at ice-free lakes and along the coast, often together at the best sites.
Foraging: in winter they graze on stubble fields and winter crops and pick up spilt grain, which makes the agricultural landscape important during the cold season.
