Hammarsjön is part of Kristianstads Vattenrike, a biosphere reserve and Ramsar-listed wetland landscape at the mouth of the river Helgeå in north-eastern Skåne. The rich reedbeds and grazed water meadows are home to Eurasian Bittern, Western Marsh Harrier and Great Crested Grebe during the breeding season, and large numbers of geese and ducks stop over in spring and autumn. The Vattenriket is a world-unique cultural landscape shaped by more than 8,000 years of human management.
