The Black-headed Gull breeds in dense colonies on islands, in reedbeds and on floating vegetation in lakes and wetlands. The colonies can comprise hundreds of pairs and provide valuable protection for other species too, such as grebes and dabbling ducks, which readily breed within the colony. The female normally lays three eggs.
