Black-headed Gull: In winter

The Black-headed Gull is largely a migrant, but ever more birds linger in southern Sweden during the cold season.

  • Departure: the majority leave in autumn and winter along coasts, at lakes and in towns further south in Europe.
  • Wintering: some birds stay in southern Sweden, especially in towns and harbours where there is open water and available food.
  • Autumn flocks: in late summer and autumn large flocks gather at coasts, fields and waste sites before migrating.
