Song flight: The characteristic "kri-wi-wi" or "vita-vita-vita" is heard from the display flight — the male flies in a switchback arc over the breeding grounds with a trumpeting, rapidly repeated call.
Contact call: "kewit" or "wik-wik" — loud and distinct; heard on landing and in flocks.
Alarm: A repeated, sharp "wie-wie-wie" when a predator or person is near the nest; combined with aggressive mobbing flights at the intruder.
