The Black-throated Diver breeds at clear, oligotrophic forest lakes with a good supply of fish. The nest is placed right at the water's edge on an islet or shore, since the bird is clumsy on land and needs to be able to slip straight into the water. The female normally lays 2 eggs, which are incubated for 28–30 days.
