It excavates a nest hole in a stout aspen or pine, an oval hole 12×8 cm. 4–6 eggs, 12–14 days' incubation. The nest holes are later used by Stock Dove, Boreal Owl, Eurasian Pygmy Owl, pine marten and squirrel — a keystone species.
