Black Woodpecker: In winter

The Black Woodpecker is a resident and holds its territory all year. During the winter it forages in dead and dying trees — the characteristic rectangular chiselled holes in stumps and fallen logs are visible year-round. In hard cold it may temporarily move outside its usual territory.
