The nest is built near water, preferably on an islet or in waterside vegetation where it is protected from land predators. The female usually lays 5–6 eggs, which she incubates for about 28–30 days while the male stands guard nearby. The young are nidifugous and follow the parents to the water soon after hatching, and the family stays together throughout the summer.
