The Common Moorhen builds its nest as a platform of plant material in or beside the reed edge, well hidden near the water surface. The clutch usually comprises 5–8 eggs, and the species often manages two broods in a season. The young are nest-leavers and can swim from an early age. An interesting trait is that older young from the year's first brood sometimes help the parents to feed the younger siblings of the next brood.
