Breeding season: May–July, 1 brood per year. - Nest: A well-built, deep cup-shaped nest of dry grass and reeds, lined with grey-white down; placed in dense shoreline vegetation near water, sometimes on a small islet. - Eggs: 7–11 eggs, greyish-green and unmarked; incubation period 24–28 days; the female incubates alone. Brood parasitism is common — the females lay eggs in each other's nests and in those of other duck species. - Young: Newly hatched ducklings follow the female and dive actively from the first day; they can fly after about 50–55 days.
