The male's territorial call is impossible to mistake: a deep, pumping "umb-umb-umb" delivered in series of 2–5 beats that carries 3–5 km in calm weather. The call is heard from early spring to midsummer, most of all at dawn and dusk. The male's air sacs act as resonating chambers and give the characteristic, tuba-like, hollow call.
