A sharp "keck" and clicking sounds. The characteristic call can also be described as a repeated "kek kek kek" with a high and penetrating tone. When disturbed — for example when a predator or a person comes too close to the nest — the Eurasian Coot gives an explosive, spluttering sound that carries far across the water. During the breeding season in May–July the calls are heard both day and night, which makes the species easier to find than to see.
