Eurasian Eagle-Owl: Nest & eggs

The Eagle-Owl builds no proper nest but lays its eggs directly on a sheltered, undisturbed spot in rocky terrain.

• Nest site: a rock ledge, a crevice or the ground beneath an overhanging rock — preferably in cliff faces, quarries and scree slopes.
• Industrial settings: the species has adapted and now also breeds in disused gravel and rock quarries.
• Early start: breeding begins as early as late winter, when the female incubates while the male hunts.

Since no nest is built, the choice of a sheltered, inaccessible ledge is decisive for the young to survive.
