Eurasian Jay: Song & calls

  • Alarm call: the characteristic screeching “skräää-skräää” — heard far off and signalling a predator.
  • Mimicry: the Jay can imitate a number of species — buzzard, Tawny Owl, cat and individual bird calls — probably to scare off competitors.
  • Song: low, gurgling and complex — rarely heard, mostly during the breeding season at close range.
