Eurasian Siskin: Nest & eggs

The Eurasian Siskin builds its own small, free-standing cup nest and so does not excavate a cavity as woodpeckers do.

• Location: high up in a conifer, preferably near the top of a spruce, well hidden among the twigs.
• Construction: a small, neat cup nest that the female weaves from fine twigs, lichens, rootlets and feathers.
• Colonial nesting: the species often nests in loose colonies and adjusts its nest site to the spruce's seed production.

The female usually lays 4–5 eggs and incubates them for about two weeks, and the well-hidden nest is hard to find.
