The drumming is calmer and more drawn out than in the Great Spotted Woodpecker — it lasts about one to two seconds, is held at an even tempo and lacks the accelerating, dying ending. The contact call is a short, soft and muffled "tjuk" or "kük" that is easily overlooked in the forest. During the breeding season a whining, slightly drawn-out "kjiij" is sometimes heard.
