European Crested Tit: Nest boxes

As mentioned, the European Crested Tit rarely takes ordinary nest boxes — it prefers to excavate the nest itself in soft, rotten wood. One exception is the so-called stump box, a box filled with sawdust that the bird can hack out itself, which mimics a rotten tree trunk and makes the box more attractive to the species than a ready-made, empty nest hole.
