Goldcrest: Nest & eggs
The Goldcrest builds one of the most skilfully made nests of any Swedish bird — a hanging, almost spherical nest well hidden among the spruce needles.
- Nest site: hung beneath a spruce branch, often high in a spruce and well concealed among dense conifer foliage.
- Material: moss and spider silk that give a thick, insulating and elastic wall, lined with feathers.
- Clutch: the tiny bird lays a large clutch and can manage two broods in a favourable season.
The dense, well-insulated nest is an adaptation that protects the many small eggs and young in the cool spruce stand.
