Goldcrest: In winter
The Goldcrest overwinters in Swedish coniferous forest, but as Europe's smallest bird it is very sensitive to cold.
- Population: southern birds are residents while northern and eastern populations partly migrate south, and hard winters can hit the residents hard.
- Food: it searches restlessly for small insects, spiders and eggs on the outer twigs of the spruce tops even in winter.
- Flocks: in autumn and winter it often joins roving tit flocks, which makes it easier to find.
