Great Tit: Nest boxes

The Great Tit is one of the most rewarding nest-box birds. The crucial factor is the diameter of the entrance hole — 32–34 mm admits the Great Tit, while 28 mm lets in only the Blue Tit.

  • Put the box up no later than February–March, before territories are established.
  • Avoid a south- or west-facing position — direct sun overheats the nest, and driving rain soaks it.
  • Clear out old nest material in late autumn to reduce parasites ahead of the next season.
  • Use untreated timber and avoid a perch (it only makes things easier for predators).
