Great Tit: Nest & eggs
The Great Tit is a cavity nester that does not excavate its own nest but instead uses ready-made cavities.
- Nest site: natural tree holes, abandoned woodpecker holes, nest boxes, letterboxes, and holes in walls and posts — usually 1–5 metres up.
- Builder: the female builds alone in about a week.
- Material: a thick bed of moss, lined with animal hair, wool, plant fibres and feathers.
- Reuse: the same cavity or nest box is often used year after year.
Because the species readily takes to artificial cavities, it is easy to attract to the garden with a nest box.
