The Green Sandpiper is unusual among waders in that it does not nest on the ground. Instead the female lays her eggs in an old tree nest previously used by a thrush, dove or squirrel, often several metres up in spruce forest. The clutch normally comprises four eggs, and the newly hatched young jump down to the ground shortly after hatching.
