The Long-tailed Duck breeds by mountain tarns and pools on the open fells. The nest is placed well concealed in low vegetation close to water. The female usually lays 6–9 eggs, which she incubates alone for about three and a half weeks. The young are nidifugous and follow the female to the water shortly after hatching, where they find their own food but are protected by the mother.
