Long-tailed Tit: Nest & eggs
The Long-tailed Tit is an open nester whose nest ranks among the most skilfully crafted in the bird world.
- Shape: an egg- or ball-shaped, fully enclosed nest with a small entrance on the side.
- Material: moss and lichen bound together with spider silk, which makes the walls elastic so that the nest grows with the young.
- Lining: lined with up to 2,000 small feathers.
- Location: built by both sexes over several weeks, hidden in a fork in a dense bush, blackthorn or birch.
Because the nest is built out in the open in shrubbery, the species does not use nest boxes.
