The Meadow Pipit's song is performed in a rising and falling song flight: the bird climbs steeply upwards, sings an accelerating series of "tsit-tsit-tsit" and then drops back towards the ground on stiff, spread wings like a parachute, while the song shifts into a ringing "tsuii-tsuii-tsuii". This song-flight behaviour is an adaptation to the treeless landscape, where fixed song posts are often lacking. The usual contact call is a thin, piping "ist-ist-ist".
