The Red-necked Grebe builds a floating nest of wet plant material, anchored at the edge of the reeds or among other vegetation. The female usually lays 4–5 eggs, which are incubated by both parents for about three weeks. The young are striped balls of down that often ride on the parents' backs during their first weeks, a behaviour typical of the grebes.
