The most distinctive feature of the Trumpeter Finch is its call. The song and the call consist of a nasal, buzzing and somewhat harsh “wha-aaah” that is often likened to the sound of a toy trumpet or a child's wind instrument. The call carries surprisingly far across the open terrain and is not seldom the first thing to reveal the bird's presence before it is seen against the similarly coloured ground.
