Western Capercaillie: Diet

The adult Capercaillie's diet varies with the season. During the long winter it lives almost entirely on pine needles, which is a very nutrient-poor diet. During the snow-free season it takes bilberry shrub, bilberries, other berries, buds and shoots. During their first weeks the chicks are entirely dependent on protein-rich insects, which makes moist, insect-rich woodland important for breeding success.
