Whinchat: In winter
The Whinchat is a true long-distance migrant that leaves Sweden entirely during the winter half of the year.
- Wintering: it migrates mainly to Africa south of the Sahara, far from the Swedish breeding grounds.
- Migration: it arrives late, in May, and leaves the country as early as August and September.
- Absence: it is not seen in Sweden in winter — it is a summer visitor on meadows, pastures, ditch edges and coastal meadows in May–July.
