The most usual way to detect the species is by its call: a penetrating, upslurred and somewhat squeaky "tsu-est" or "tsoo-eet". The sound is fairly easy to learn and gives the bird away even when it stays hidden in dense scrub. Because the Yellow-browed Warbler often occurs singly and silently, the call may be the only clue.
