The Yellowhammer's song is unmistakable: a series of uniform, slightly accelerating notes ending in a longer, higher final note, "ti-ti-ti-ti-ti-ti-tüüüh". The song is memorably rendered in English as "a little bit of bread and no cheese". The male sings persistently from an exposed perch throughout the summer, often from the top of a bush, a fence or a power line, and a single male may repeat the phrase hundreds of times in a day. The dogged song can be heard well into high summer, when most other birds have fallen silent. The call is a short, sharp "tsi".
