Yellowhammer: In winter

The Yellowhammer is a partial resident and gathers in winter in flocks in the farming landscape.

  • Flocks: often seen together with other buntings and finches on stubble fields and around farmsteads.
  • Food: spilt grain and grass seeds that it looks for on the ground; it readily visits spilt grain beneath the bird table.
  • Dependent on farming: a shortage of stubble fields and spilt grain in winter is one cause of the species' decline (near threatened).
