The Black Grouse's diet varies markedly with the seasons. In winter it lives largely on birch buds and catkins, supplemented with shoots of sallow and pine. In summer it browses on bilberry sprigs, berries and herbs. During their first weeks the chicks depend on insects and other small creatures as protein-rich food, and the availability of insect-rich ground is therefore important for breeding success.
