Black Grouse: In winter
The Black Grouse is a resident that can be seen year-round and survives the winter in its open habitats.
- Food: in winter it lives largely on birch buds and catkins, supplemented with shoots of sallow and pine.
- Behaviour: on cold, clear winter days the Black Grouse is often seen perched in birches where it browses on buds.
- Habitat: it keeps to open mires, clear-cuts and mountain birch forest where woodland and open ground meet.
Because it is a resident, the Black Grouse remains present all year, but it is at its most conspicuous during the spring leks.
