The cocks' display call is a characteristic, continuous and muffled bubbling that is often described as “bubb-bubb-bubb-bubb” and can carry several kilometres across open ground. This is mixed with an explosive, hissing “tschu-äsch” heard when the cocks lunge at one another. The hen has a hard, cackling call. The display is at its most intense during the early mornings of spring.
