Common Buzzard: In winter
The Buzzard is a partial migrant: some individuals overwinter in Sweden while others migrate.
- Southern Swedish birds: many remain in the farmland districts and hunt voles from roadsides, power poles and fence posts.
- Northern birds: individuals from Norrland are pronounced short-distance migrants and winter in southern Europe and North Africa.
- Winter food: carrion becomes especially important during cold spells, and animals killed on roads attract wintering buzzards.
Seeing a Buzzard watching from a field edge is therefore quite possible even in the middle of winter in southern Sweden.
