The Common Linnet lives almost exclusively on small seeds, with a clear preference for the seeds of arable weeds and wild herbs. Even the young are fed largely on seeds, which is unusual among small birds. This strong dependence on weed seeds means the species is disadvantaged when farming becomes more intensive and arable land cleaner.
