Common Linnet: In winter

The Common Linnet is partly resident and partly a short-distance migrant, and some birds leave the country in winter.

• Migration: many linnets move south in autumn, while some overwinter in southern Sweden.
• Flocks: in winter and on migration the species moves in twittering flocks that search for seeds on open, scrubby ground.
• Diet: small seeds from arable weeds and wild herbs are the staple food, which means the species is disadvantaged by cleaner, more intensive farming.

The Common Linnet is therefore easiest to see in open pasture and scrubland during the summer half of the year.
