Common Redpoll: Nest & eggs

The Common Redpoll builds its own small, free-standing cup nest in a tree or bush and does not excavate any cavity.

• Site: in birch or other deciduous woodland, placed in a tree branch or a bush.
• Construction: a small, neat cup of twigs, grass and feathers that the female weaves together.
• Timing: the species can nest quite late and in loosely knit groups, with its distribution tied to the seed production of the birch woods.

The female usually lays 4–6 eggs, which she incubates for about twelve days.
